The fact is that one of the missions of the nineteenth century's police, was to keep homosexuals (among others) under surveillance all over Europe and Russia and that, logically, footsteps of these activities have to be found in the archives of the police, and obviously not in the form of literary writings

. It's possible that nineteenth century's Tolstoi didn't write "dick", but nineteenth century's police officers did in their reports about homosexuals.
