12 BRILLIANT KURT COBAIN QUOTES THAT BECAME REALITY IN COLLEGE
1) “WANTING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE, IS A WASTE OF THE PERSON YOU ARE.”
It seems so obvious when put into the right words, but as the saying goes, the grass is always greener on the other side. When I put those wasteful thoughts aside and truly tried to see myself and who I am, I was finally able to begin the journey toward becoming the best version of myself. No one can do you better than you do yourself, don’t deny yourself that beautiful opportunity. It’s always going to be a work in progress, but it’ll be your progress–which is far more fulfilling.
2) “THE DUTY OF YOUTH IS TO CHALLENGE CORRUPTION.”
When I began to realize that I don’t agree with a lot of what is going on in the world around me, I found out that I had the power to incite change and that there were other options. We didn’t get to the point we are at as a society through sitting around and taking shit from the wrongdoers. We are privileged enough to be living in a free world, with power in each of our young minds to challenge orthodox views that were determined before toilet paper was invented and women were allowed the right to vote. If you want it changed, go change it yourself or watch in silence.
3) “PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, BUT NOBODY’S PERFECT, SO WHY PRACTICE?”
Ask yourself who you trying to be perfect for, because although nobody ever is or will be perfect, its not necessarily wrong to strive for perfection if you want to do it for yourself. Accept that perfection is an unattainable goal, use it for self-motivation, and remember to celebrate all that you’ve already accomplished.
4) “THE PROBLEMS WITH GROUPS WHO DEAL WITH RAPE IS THAT THEY TRY TO EDUCATE WOMEN ABOUT HOW TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.”
Cobain was a true feminist. He spoke words of such logic and intellect, that people often misunderstood his meaning. Two decades after his death, people are beginning to realize his cryptic messages for their true purpose in his music. Society convinces us that victims are responsible for being sexually assaulted. But Cobain explained to us years ago how messed up that type of thinking truly is. Rapists and assailants are responsible for their behavior and not having the ability to control themselves. We need to teach people to not invade other’s privacy, not teach women that they are to blame for being sexualized by society. Furthermore, we need to stop pretending that only women can be victims of sexual assault, it is a crime and it could, unfortunately, happen to anyone–regardless of their gender, sexuality or their actions.
5) “I’M SO HAPPY CAUSE TODAY I FOUND MY FRIENDS. THEY’RE IN MY HEAD.”
This is absolutely not to say don’t have friends. But the older you get, the more you realize that no one can be there for you like you can be there for yourself and there is a benefit in realizing that as early as you can. Everyone in your life has their purpose, whether it be for business or leisure. But you should be your number one obligation because everyone else is doing exactly that, so there isn’t anyone left to be that for you, but yourself.
6) “I STARTED BEING REALLY PROUD OF THE FACT THAT I WAS GAY EVEN THOUGH I WASN’T.”
I have always been an ally for the LGBT community, but after I got to college and experienced my own struggles with discrimination, I truly began to have an even larger admiration for the LGBT community. Their spirit and pride is contagious and I feel as though I can understand exactly what Cobain was feeling at the moment he said that. If we could all empathize with one another’s highs and lows, we would be so much more appreciative of life, and understanding of each other’s struggles to avoid these same conflicts we continue to face everyday. Happiness knows no boundaries, and it certainly doesn’t discriminate, so why do we continue to? Put yourself in someone else’s shoes, and if you can’t, then realize your privilege in not having to.
7) “WE HAVE NO RIGHT TO EXPRESS AN OPINION UNTIL WE KNOW ALL OF THE ANSWERS.”
Living in a free country seems to have a lot of people thinking they have the right to be ignorant. But if you’re ignorant of the opposing argument, or strongly support something you don’t know all the answers to, then you don’t have a valid argument and you don’t really know what you’re talking about. Bottom line? It’s dangerous. Have an opinion, but know what your opinion is up against, you may be surprised at how even the playing field really is. Think outside the box, too, it isn’t always a battle between two sides.
8) “I’D RATHER BE HATED FOR WHO I AM, THAN LOVED FOR WHO I AM NOT.”
Why should someone else’s approval of you, determine how you portray yourself? Everyone has insecurities, including that individual, and if they don’t have the ability to admire your genuine qualities, then they don’t deserve to have you as a part of their life. I’m content with someone thinking being a feminist is uncool, because I think they’re uncool for not being a feminist. It works both ways—own your qualities and realize the value of your opinion and no one can ever mess with you. The mind holds a lot of power.
9) “MY HEART IS BROKE BUT I HAVE SOME GLUE.”
Heartbreak is inevitable in life, but when it happens, you have to realize that it isn’t permanent, even if in that moment it feels like it will never be okay again. Cobain had simple solutions to life’s problems, because often times it’s easy to overthink things than to realize that the solution could be right in front of you all along. It’s perfectly fine to be sad, but get that glue and stick your heart back into place where it belongs. There is too much beauty in life to sit there and sulk over a person who couldn’t appreciate having you, especially when there is someone better waiting at the finish line.
10) “NOBODY DIES A VIRGIN, LIFE FUCKS US ALL.”
Life’s tough, and this quote sums it up to the T. No matter how perfect someone else’s life may seem, life doesn’t favor anyone, so know that you’re not alone in this brutal battle. Everything bad that happens in life is going to suck, but whether it makes you a better or worse person in the end is going to depend on your attitude towards it. Don’t let the bad times get you down, and make sure to treat yo’ self (okay, so that was Parks and Rec and not Kurt, but I’m sure he would approve that message) every once in a while.
11) “THEY LAUGH AT ME BECAUSE I’M DIFFERENT; I LAUGH AT THEM BECAUSE THEY’RE ALL THE SAME.”
This fits the theme of #1 and #8, but it needs to be highlighted on its own. Whether you’re in the minority or not, at least you’re not a clone of one single idea. When you look at groups of people as a whole, you can see who’s style is being imitated, and who the individual with the style is, because that person makes it look good while the others just look like a bunch of lost posers…honestly. So get your own trademark going and look good doing it, otherwise you’re just going to look like a waddling duck, and those guys are the first to get hit by a car because they’re busy paying attention to someone who’s too busy looking ahead.
12) “IT’S BETTER TO BURN OUT THAN FADE AWAY.”
Never be afraid to make a statement, because it leaves a lasting impression no matter what. But when you’re too afraid to shine, you leave without a trace. Showcase your talents and live limitlessly. It’s the only way to make the life you live the best one you could live. It’s all up to you in the end, but if you want, I’m here to tell you that you should.
