Pros:
Skiing - Winters are LONG. If you don’t like winter sports, Vermont may not be your cup of tea.
Maple sugaring - This is a cultural thing, it’s not about profit. It’s about making the best maple syrup in the world. Towards the end of the season, tappers throw parties and we have a blast! Sugar on snow is a delicacy that needs to be tried.
Scenery - I used to live in NYC and watching the sunset on the Adirondacks is much nicer than watching the sunset on Hoboken. At any time of year, you can pull over on a mountain road and find SOMETHING to take photos of.
NO BILLBOARDS - Like I said, I used to live in NYC. Consumerism is IN YOUR FACE everywhere. I worked in Time Square and ads were just EVERYWHERE. Vermont outlawed billboards in the 70’s (I think) and it’s wonderful.
Outdoor sports - if you like fishing, hiking, hunting, canoeing/kayaking, hang gliding, cycling, mountain biking, rock climbing, or golf, you will love Vermont.
Food - believe it or not, you will find some of the finest cuisine in Vermont. I could go on and on about: Hen of the Woods (Bernie Sander’s favorite place to eat), Café Provence in Brandon, Pho Hung in Burlington, Superfresh! in Brattleboro, Mary’s at the Inn at Baldwin Creek in Bristol, The American Grill in Londonderry. Basically, you don’t need to travel far to find really great places to eat. I thought I would miss different food cultures, but Vermont has kept me very satisfied. Plus, the locavore movement is in full swing up here.
Politeness - There’s only 600k people here. You never know who is going to see you, so you better be nice to folks and not pick your nose or honk your horn in your car. You might be honking at your boss’ wife, or your girlfriend’s mom.
Safety - The gun culture here is REALLY loose. I can go to Walmart and pick up a handgun during lunch. It’s very easy to do. That being said, almost no one gets shot. Between 2011 and 2016, there were 47 gun-related homicides. There were more fatalities, but they were suicides. If I hear a shot go off, my first thought is “George is gonna have some great venison sausage soon! Woohoo!”
Animals - We have woodland critters visit our house pretty regularly. We even had a fox den down the road from us. Nothing is cuter than 11 fox kits frolicking with each other. I had to really reign myself in to NOT play with them. We’ve had rabbits all over the place, at least until the ermine showed up and murdered them all. It’s rarely boring.
Diversity - Everyone looks the same here. We’re all white folks. From a LOOKS standpoint, there’s no diversity at all. If you look at people’s thoughts and opinions, that changes completely. Everyone has their own, independent ideas about things. This is almost humorous in it’s extreme. Even the town of “Ferrisburg” can’t decide whether or not the name of the town ends with an “H”.
Cons:
Winter - Yes, the winter sports are great, but it comes at a price. Winter starts around October and lasts through May. That’s a LONG time to be cold. It even got down to -30F at my house last year. Know what the surface temp on Mars is at noon? It’s ONLY -20F!!! IT WAS 10 DEGREES COLDER AT MY HOUSE THAN IT WAS ON MARS!!
Commuting - you need to drive everywhere. There’s no public transit to speak of. I almost miss the NYC subway because despite the smell, crowd, noise and smell (did I mention smell?), at least I got to read for an hour each way. I can’t do that in the car.
People - There’s not really a con here, but some Vermonters can be… um… mercurial? One thing I noticed is that they tend to use landmarks when they give directions. “You go to the bottom of this hill, then make a left at the stand of poplar trees. Go half a mile past the old Smith farm, and make a left at the sugar shack.” Meanwhile, you’re from Pittsburgh and this is the first time you’ve seen trees. WTF, guys?!?
Cars - This state EATS cars. Because of the extreme winters, the roads are covered in brine. You NEED rustproofing on your car, or Vermont will slowly chew it up.
Space - There are very few people in a lot of space. Everything is at least half an hour away from everything else in this state. Yes, other states have this much worse (I’m looking at you, Montana), but it always seems like a long drive to get anywhere.
Wood rot - Water is an abundant resource here. We will never have a drought, at least not where I live. Anything made of wood will need to be treated or rebuilt every 20 years or so. I have tons of work to do on my house to make sure it doesn’t just crumble apart.
Culture - There are maybe 8 museums in the whole state. I used to go to museums a lot in NYC. I’ve memorized most of the exhibits in Vermont already.
Mud season - Between April and sometime in May, we have “mud season”. There are a LOT of dirt roads in Vermont. They become bogs when the snow melts. A common joke is: Bill is walking down his dirt road when he comes upon Frank’s hat in the middle of the road. He lifts it up and see Frank’s head under it. He says, “Frank, you want me to pull you out of the mud?” “Naw, I’m fine, Bill. I have a good, solid horse under me.”
You’re not weird - No matter who you are, where you’re from, what line of work you’re in, what religion you are, what schools you attended, how many Barbie heads you have in the box under your bed, you’re not weird. Vermont is built on weird. Weird is normal here. No one is special because we all are. Keep Vermont Weird
I’m a transplant from NYC who moved up here in 2013 and I’m never moving anywhere else. I’m home! Come on by anytime!
